The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a landmark decision to add more than 10,000 new medical seats in government colleges across India. This includes 5,023 undergraduate (MBBS) seats and 5,000 postgraduate (PG) seats. The expansion, part of Phase-III of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS), aims to strengthen India’s medical education and healthcare infrastructure over the next three years.
Massive Expansion of Medical Seats
This initiative, with an estimated investment exceeding Rs 15,000 crore, is aligned with the government’s broader vision to add 75,000 medical seats nationally in five years. The central government will contribute over Rs 10,300 crore, while state governments will share the remaining financial burden. Increasing the seat capacity targets the high demand among over 20 lakh students appearing for the NEET exams annually.
Benefits for Healthcare and Medical Education
By boosting the availability of MBBS and PG seats in existing government medical colleges and institutions, the scheme aims to:
- Enhance the supply of doctors, including specialists, nationwide
- Introduce new medical specialties in government institutions
- Improve accessibility to quality healthcare in underserved and rural regions
- Promote equitable distribution of healthcare education resources across states
Current Scenario and Historical Growth
India presently has 808 medical colleges with approximately 1.2 lakh MBBS seats and 74,306 PG seats. The number of medical seats has nearly doubled since 2014, when there were only 51,328 MBBS and 31,185 PG seats. This consistent expansion is a response to the increasing demand for medical education and the need to strengthen the healthcare workforce.

Strategic Investment in Medical Infrastructure
The scheme also raises the cost ceiling for seat creation to Rs 1.5 crore to ensure the development of superior infrastructure and faculty. It includes upgrading existing government medical colleges, standalone PG institutes, and hospitals. The government aims to strengthen medical education quality alongside increasing quantity.
Conclusion
This significant expansion of over 10,000 medical seats will create tremendous opportunities for aspiring doctors and help address India’s growing healthcare demands. Enhanced medical education capacity will directly contribute to better healthcare accessibility, especially in underserved regions, securing a healthier future for the nation.
This move marks a critical step in India’s ongoing efforts to increase the number of qualified medical professionals while elevating the standards of medical institutions nationwide.
